#HRMixTape2018

February 23, 2018

I love contributing to fun things like this.  Mark Hendy (@markSWHRF), HR Pro and Moderator of #TheHRHour, wrote an article last year on his blog using song choices as a backdrop for his message.  Which he dubbed #HRMixTape.  This year, he's doing it again, and asking for others to contribute their thoughts.  How could I pass this up??

I'm a big fan of hair bands, so you'll forgive me for being a little pigeon-holed into that genre.  But here's my contribution to #HRMixTape2018.  Originally posted on Mark's blog.  Link here.

“Music is my life, it is a reflection of what I go through.”

– Lenny Kravitz

Aerosmith – Walk This Way

We all know that workplace culture is important.  And HR often gets looked to as the “keeper of the culture”. But actually, it’s our senior leaders, executives, CxO’s, who really drive it.  They show us how things work at our company.  Employees will model the behavior that they see their bosses and leaders exhibit, good or bad.  With that said, that doesn’t mean HR gets to wash its hands of culture.  We should be the ones getting in front of our senior leaders, reminding them of the part they play in setting the culture and tone of the company, and providing them with some tips and resources to set the best example possible.

Led Zeppelin – Communication Breakdown

It’s no secret that we have more age groups working under one roof than any time in history.  In my company, for example, we have 16- and 17-year old students as well as retirees who are in there 60’s, 70’s, and sometimes 80’s.  These people sometimes look at things very differently.  It doesn’t make one group right or one group wrong, it just means that we need to work that much harder to understand each other.  And HR is uniquely placed with the right skillset to help our team members through any challenges.

Def Leppard – Pour Some Sugar On Me

There’s way too much hanky-panky going on at work.   Whether it’s consensual or not.  Get back to work, and knock it off.

Guns ‘n Roses – Welcome to the Jungle

HR folks deal with a lot.  Some days are just plain crazy.  We spend a lot of our time tending to the needs of our team members and leaders.  It can be exhausting and mentally and emotionally draining.  There are where days we leave the office, call our bff or drinking buddy, and bee-line it to the nearest happy hour.  That’s just the nature of the beast.   But we need a support system too.  Preferably one that doesn’t involve booze.

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Simple Man

Most people’s work goals are pretty simple.  Find a job they enjoy with people they like to be around.  They don’t all want to be promoted within 6 months, and running the company in 3 years.  They want to provide for their family, be able to get off work in time to take their kids to baseball practice, things like that.  We need to empower these people as much as we do the “rising stars”.  Because they are the backbones of our companies, the ones doing the work day-in and day-out.  Get their take on the jobs they are doing, ask things like “what ideas do you have to make your job more efficient?”.  You’ll be amazed at what they have to tell you.
